about

This song is a rebuttal of sorts to Al Stewart's classic, "Year of the Cat". What ever happened to the character in that song? Here's my answer.

music and lyrics by Dave Stagner

lyrics

In an evening from a Bollywood movie
In a haze of road dust and smog
You walk through the shadows of skyscrapers
Bring tourists back from the ancient ruins

You go home to the old part of the city
Eat your dinner of curry and rice
The noise and the smell of the 21st century
And the ruins of a world left behind

And it's always and never the Year of the Cat

You left her with the monsoon rain
Just like you knew you would all along
Your parents sent you money and a plane ticket
It was time to go back home where you belong

You changed your mind while waiting at the airport
You thumbed a ride back to town
The flat was empty, all of her things were gone
Your reason to stay was nowhere to be found

And it's always and never the Year of the Cat

Now everyone you know has a cell phone
Some of them even have cars
They tell you that it's good for business
They can always find out where you are

For the first few years you hoped you would find her
Pretending she'd come back passed the time
Now staying here is easier than going back
And tourists like an English speaking guide

Pretty college girls wearing patchouli
The memories and the moss-eaten stairs
Your wasted life in this ancient city
Where you keep your foolish heart and aging bones

And it's always and never the Year of the Cat
